Endurance Training ? Overtraining Muscle Loss Run to Exhaustion Sympathetic Medium Intensity Steady State Parasympathetic HIIT Like Training No Overtraining

HIIT-like 400m sprinting is exhausting, but unlike running to exhaustion and medium intensity steady state cardio its not going to mess up your nervous system.
Not one but two recent studies confirm what many of us have experienced first hand: Endurance training - specifically during a cut - is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, its a neat way to augment the energy deficit, when youre dieting and maintain in a eucaloric state, when youre not. On the other hand, however, even moderate endurance training can alter the sympathetic and parasympathetic balance and thus create an imbalance that is characteristic of any form of overtraining.

Due to the fact that the symptoms (see Figure 1) closely resemble those Morbus Basedow (engl. Graves Diseases) and Addisons Disease, respectively, sympathetic and parasympathetic overtraining are also called Basedowoid and Addisinoid overtraining.

You can see that the symptoms partly overlap. Thats yet not the only problem you have if you want to diagnose the type of overtraining. In many resistance trainees, for example, you find either mixed forms or see a transition from classic sympathetic to parasympathetic overtraining over time (assuming the athlete doesnt do anything to normalize his / her sympathetic nervous system function).
There is no formula to calculate how much exercise you can sustain, but Id suggest you take a look at my previous articles on heart rate variability and overtraining ("Are You Overtraining? Two Scientifically Proven Methods to Test Yourself - Method 1: Heart Rate Variability Analyses" | read more). They will help you to check, where youre at, if you have a baseline reading that was taken, when youve been completely rested  | learn more.

made them overtrain or not, and whether their para- or sympathetic nervous system was overreacting.

The subjects, 72 nonsmoking male students whose characteristics are summarized in Table 1, followed the routine they had been randomized to for 8 weeks. As you can see, there were no statistical significant changes in body composition over the course of the 8-week study. Although, it sould seem that the body fat percentage (I assume BFR is body fat) declined a tad bit more in the high intensity group.
Greater fat loss with HIIT, this wouldnt be a surprise - Thats no news for you as a SuppVersity reader. Ive repeatedly pointed out that the short intense workouts are more suitable for fat loss; and that not in spite of, but rather because they may burn less body fat during exercise.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, I suggest you take another look at my June 2012 article "Are You Still Burning Calories or Already Losing Fat? Study Shows: 5x15 Min HIIT Reduce Body Fat & Improve Fitness Twice as Effectively as 5x40min of Classic Cardio" (learn more) after youve finished this article.
Where the subjects differed, however, was in their response to the specific aerobic exercise programs theyve been assigned to (I will directly quote the results from Tian et al (2014) and briefly comment on each of them):
  • Heart rate variability (HRV): No significant changes in HRV parameters were found in all groups at pre and mid. But at post, the moderate intensity group showed more significant increases in RMSSD, PNN50, HF, LF and SDNN (P < 0.05 or 0.01) and much greater reduction in LF/HF than the other two groups (P was 0.033, 0.037 respectively). HFn of the moderate intensity group was significantly higher than that of the utmost intensity group (P = 0.012), while the opposite pattern occurred in LFn and LF/HF of the two groups (P was 0.025, 0.015 respectively).

    As you would expect the changes in HRV in the moderate and utmost intensity group reflect increases in parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system activity, respectively.
  • Circadian Changes in Cold Pressor Test (CPT): From pre to post marked differences were not found in SBP and DBP of all groups and their increases. At post HR was much less increased in utmost intensity group during CPT than the other two groups (average P < 0.05).

    Next to a high basal heart rate an inhibited increase in heart rate is another characteristic of later stages of sympathetic overtraining.
  • Plasma catecholamine (NE & EPI): Norepinephrine (NE) concentration was considerably lower in utmost intensity group than the other two groups (P was 0.001, 0.00 respectively). At post marked inter-group differences were still not found in plasma PEI concentration.

    A reduced catecholamine release is a classic characteristic of long(-er) term sympathetic overtraining - a phenomenon, some people may call "adrenal fatique" that occurs after an initial phase of catecholamine overproduction in sympathetic overtraining.
Overall, the results of the study at hand confirm previous research that found associations between classic "moderate intensity" endurance training and parasympathetic dominance (Yamamoto. 2001; Pichot. 2002; Myslivecek. 2002).

For the utmost intensity group, on the other hand, the scientists diagnosed an "over-excited SN [sympathetic nervous system]" (Tian. 2014), which is in contrast to the medium intensity and high intensity group, where the head-up tilt test did not indicate an "impairing effect on autonomic regulation" (Tian. 2014).
What about muscle loss? Oh, yes! I almost forgot that scientists from the University of the Witwatersrand (Oost- huyse. 2014) in South Africa have recently been able to show that 3 h of race- simulated cycling on 4 consecutive days may improve the cyclists ability to tap into their fat stores as an energy reserve. Unfortuna- tely, it will also lead to a 28-46% greater reliance on endogenous protein catabolism during exercise on day 2-4.
Now, every SuppVersity reader knows that protein catabolism doesnt necessarily translate ot "muscle loss", but for the average 10h of cardio + 20% energy deficit "dieter", it could.
Bottom line: A least in the study at hand, the intense, albeit better short bouts of high intensity exercise in the HIIT-like high intensity group of the study at hand turn out to be the least overtraining prone type of aerobic activity.

Even the classic medium-intensity cardio training appears to be more overtraining-prone, due to the comparatively long duration and the subsequent increase in parasympathetic nervous system activity. If youre looking for a "side-effect free" cardio regimen, 3-5x intervals of 3x400m sprints could be a good way to incorporate cardio training into your exercise routine.

One thing we should keep in mind, though, is that someone who is sympathetically overtraining in the gym with all its negative consequences (see Figure 1) would probably be better of with classic "moderate intensity cardio" to bring up the parasympathetic tone and avoid "weight lifting induced" sympathetic dominance | Comment on Facebook!

How to fix the No Disk c0000013 error

The Windows - No Disk c0000013 error message indicates that software is searching for data in an empty disk drive. You can neither close the error window nor shut down your PC. You can turn off your PC only by disconnecting its AC power.


The c0000013 Problem has various causes. For example, it can occur immediately after you insert an Ubuntu installation CD. It can also occur after you install new software, update your Windows operating system, or update security software. This problem also has multiple solutions, not all of which work for all people.

Simplest Solution
For most people, disabling all USB card readers is the simplest solution to the c0000013 problem. Of course, you can later temporarily enable any card reader as needed. For example, to download digital photos you can enable an appropriate card reader, and then disable again it after you have finished using it.

To fix the c0000013 problem by disabling all USB card readers, do the following:
  1. Click on the Start button, click on Settings, and then click on Control Panel to open it.
  2. Double-click on the System icon to display the "System Properties" window.
  3. Click on the Hardware tab to display its page, and the click on the Device Manager button to display its page.
  4. Click on the Disk drive plus sign (+) to list all disk drives.
  5. For each USB disk drive, such as the "Generic - Compact Flash USB Device," do the following:
         a. Right-click on the USB disk drive to display its menu.
         b. Click on Disable to display a confirmation window.
         c. Click on the Yes button to disable the USB card reader (disk drive).

Note: If you need to use any card reader frequently, you need not disable it; simply leave a card in its slot.

Over the past couple of weeks, ... no actually over the past years I have repeatedly written about the concept of (mito-)hormesis and its consequences for the well-established, but not necessarily accurate free radical theory of aging (and for some people everything else). ROS, i.e. reactive oxygen species, have been established as an important signalling molecule that is - among other things - heavily involved in the insulin sensitizing effects of exercise. That being said, the latest study from the Institute of Health and Environmental Medicine in Tianjin, China, opens another "anti-antioxidant" Box of Pandora. One that puts a huge questionmark behind the implications of hundreds of thousands of scientific studies, when it says in its title, already: "No correlation is found for vegetables between antioxidant capacity and potential benefits in improving antioxidant function in aged rats"

This is a title that may in fact change the way we look at study results like those of a recent study by Valdez-Morales, et al. (2014) investigating the "best" = highest antioxidant tomato, the results of which you are about to find among the ~20/day SuppVersity Facebook News @ www.facebook.com/SuppVersity - dont forget to like it, or youll miss out on the latest science news!

If the results of the study can be confirmed by an independent team for vegetables other than lotus root, rape or cucumber and if there is an identical mismatch between the in-vivo anti-oxidant capacity and the potential benefits in improving antioxidant function in (aged) humans.

This would be big and highly consequential news for nutrition experts, scientists and average Joes and Janes like you and me. Why? Well,...
  • any ranking of "superfoods" that was based even partly on in vitro data derived with the good old ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay would be invalid, ...
  • every scientist who has been following up on "promising" data from FRAP assays would have been wasting his time, ...
  • and you may have been eating all the wrong foods for years...
... hell no, as long as you ate your veggies over the past years, I wouldnt worry if you may have made a "suboptimal" selection (which would be different based on whatever new criteria you select).

Honestly, Id hope that you didnt select your foods only based on the orthorexic principle of maximal antioxidant content, anyways. 

Never forget the three principles of veggie eating: Variety, seasonality, colorfulness

Against that background Id recommend you keep eating your lotus roots, if you like them, although, they have a significantly lower beneficial effect on SuperOxide Dismutase (SOD, a group of antioxidant enzymes) than rape and cucumber.

Moreover, if you look closely at the data in Figure 1+2, you will realize that lotus may suck at SOD and its ability to reduce hemolysis (the destruction of red blood cells), but will have the most profound beneficial effects on the levels of malondealdehyde (MDA), a marker of lipid oxidation, and the amount of plasma carbonyls, which have - just as in cellular regulation, aging, and disease (Levine. 2002). Just like their similarly radical cousins, carbonyls will thus play a dual role so that in the end, their reduction may not be beneficial in each and every case.

The Take Away: Whatever the role of carbonyls, MDA & co may be and no matter what you believe which of the three tested vegetables may be the "best" one, if there is one definite message you can take home from todays SuppVersity article, its not to overly rely on the abstract data from chemical tests the reliability of which appears to be inversely proportional to their accuracy.

Trust your instincts and go for a broad variety of vegetables. Eat seasonal! Eat colorful! And most importantly eat plenty. Optimal or not, none of the vegetables in the study at hand would harm you - all of them would help you defy diabesity and slow the aging process as best mother nature allows.

Happy New Year Hangover Cures 8 Cures That Work Two Dozen Purported Cures That Have No Scientific Backup

Happy New Year! In case this guy looks anywhere similar to how you feel after yesterdays party night, todays SuppVersity article is for you!
"Happy New Year", health, love, ... you know the whole litany, so lets get over it and straight to the things that are really important, today. The hangover cures. In the following I have compiled an extensive yet probably by no means complete list of scientifically proven hangover cures that may help better than aspirin and plenty of water (Harvard Health Letter. 2006), alone.

Apropos aspirin, its actually not too bad to start with 400-800mg of it, if you are having a hangover. It has after been shown to block the increased prostaglandin synthesis in response to alcohol ingestion and thus counter at least the inflammatory aspect of the hangover (George. 1979).

The latter cannot be said of another common pain killer: Acetaminophen, which failed to inhibit ethanol-induced subjective effects in human volunteers in a 1992 study by Pickworth et al. The same study by George et al. would yet also suggest that aspirin may also prolong the time it takes for the alcohol to leave your system completely... and this may not be your only problem, because the coingestion of aspirin and alcohol has been associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal haemorrhage (Needham. 1971).

So what do you do if water and aspirin are not enough? Well, here are a couple of suggestions - in a more or less random order, since there are hardly any studies that compare the efficacy of one to another.
  • Figure 1: Effects of 200mg tolfenamic acid on hangover symptoms in man (Kaivola. 1983).
    Tolfenamic acid - Tolfenamic acid is a very specific prostaglandin biosynthesis inhibitor that lead to significant reductions in hangover symptoms in a 1983 study by Kaivola, et al. (see Figure 1).

    The only problem is: The subjects consumed the 200mg of the anti-migraine drug tolfenamic acid before they started binge drinking. Whether the effects are similarly pronounced if you take it the day after remains to be elucidated.
  • Gamma linoleic acid (GLA) - The omega-6 fatty acid from vegetable oils like rapeseed/canola oil and soy beans, walnuts, flax seed (linseed oil), perilla, chia, and hemp seed effectively reduced the hangover symptoms of human volunteers in a study the results of which have unfortunately never been officially published (Moesgaard; based on Pittler. 2005).

    In view of the fact that I have only 2nd hand access to the results I cannot tell you how much GLA you would need. Considering the effect that the supplement contained B officinalis aka Borage, which contains 26-36% GLA, if its not specifically enriched, I would yet assume that 100-300mg should do.

  • Yeast + B-Vitamins: Another trial tested the efficacy of 250 mg dried yeast, 0.5 mg thiamine nitrate, 0.5 mg pyridoxine hydrochloride, and 0.5 mg riboflavin in participants who consumed vodka (40% volume alcohol) amounting to a total of 100 g absolute alcohol (Laas. 1999). The difference in the change for the symptoms discomfort, restlessness, and impatience was statistically significant in favor of the yeast preparation and appear to suggest that the corresponding supplement aka "Morning Fit" works.

    Moreover, corresponding research from the Chungnam National University in Korea shows that a preparation of combined glutathione-enriched yeast and rice embryo/soybean extracts constitutes a  "a promising candidate for improvements of alcoholic hangover" (Lee. 2009), as well.
  • Oh!K - A hangover cure with green ginger, turmeric, pepper, and green tea extract, along with salt, citric and ascorbic acid and fructose as the carrier worked pretty well in a recent study by Gopi et al. (2014).
  • Sprite! Or rather a sprite-like herbal drink - In the media you may have read about Sprite, when in fact the two drinks researchers from the Sun Yat-Sen University in China tested and found to be effective in increasing the production of the enzyme that helps our bodies to get rid of alcohol were xue bi, a fizzy lemon and lime drink of which the researchers did not declare that it was indeed Sprite and hui yi su da shui, probably a type of soda water (Li. 2014).
  • After Affect(R): Another commercially available anti-hangover cure "proved" to be effective in a non-randomized non-controlled trial from the Utrecht University (Vester. 2012).

GLA: gamma-linolenic acid, EPA: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and DHA: docosahexaenoic acid (Verster. 2012).
    If it were not for the reasonable ingredient profile (see Table 1), I probably wouldnt have listed it, but with GLA, magnesium, B-vitamins & co it does contain a bunch of ingredients that may actually help.
  • Party Smart (carbonate mix) - Yet another commercial preparation that contains calcium carbonate (615 mg) and vegetable carbon (345 mg) and has - unfortunately - to be consumed while you are drinking.

    More specifically, the subjects in the 2004 study by Manu et al. consumed their first serving of two caplets with first drink and two more caplets every 2 to 3 hours (or 5 to 6 drinks).

    The data in Figure 3 does yet indicate that this alkalization regimen worked pretty well (I wonder if sodium bicarbonate would to the same ;-) is a pretty effective means to (a) keep the hangover in check and (b) help your body clear the alcohol from your bloodstream.
  • Aging! Ok, I know this does not really help you today, but maybe on New Years Eve 2065! Tolstrup et al. found that hangover following engagement in binge drinking is much more common in the young than in the older age groups (Tolstrup. 2014). For women, similar results were obtained.

    As the scientists point out, "[t]his finding could not be explained by the usual amount of alcohol consumption, frequency of binge drinking, or the proportion of alcohol consumed with meals" (Tolstrup. 2014).

You still feel like dying? If all these cures didnt help and you feel as if you were about to die, today, you may have inherited a special gene variant from of Aldehyde Dehydrogenase (ALDH2) an Asian ancestor that makes you extra susceptible to more severe hangovers (Wall. 2000).

And if you are totally desperate you may want to give C scolymus aka Artichoke leaves and O ficus-indica extracts a final try. While two randomized controlled trials did not intergroup differences for their main outcome measures (Pittler. 2003; Wiese. 2004), both are often hailed as natural hangover remedies. The same can be said of most of the other remedies you will find if you google anti-hangover cures on the Internet (see table on the right). As Pittler et al. highlight in their 2005 review of the literature, none of them has reliable scientific evidence that would confirm that they are working | Comment on Facebook!
