How to Change Measurement Unit of Office 2003 07 and 10

Couple of months ago, I wrote about how to show text boundaries in MS Office. If you need to know about text boundaries then read the following post:
  • How to Show Text Boundaries in Microsoft Office: Applies for 2003, 07 and 10
Today Im gonna talk about changing the measurement unit of Microsoft Office. You know what is measurement unit. This is the unit by which you can set up your page size, margins etc. etc.. But sometimes it may be changed due the change in the language option. Or other program may lead the change. Whatever the reason you might be in trouble due to the change in the measurement scale.

Or sometimes the default settings might not be in your favor. For example, you would like to work in inches. But default setting is centimeters. And you may not know that 1 inch equals to 2.54 centimeters. And this is very irritating too.

Ok lets see how to customize the measurement scale. Im gonna discuss about all the running versions of Microsoft Office.

For Office 2003 Users:
Open MS Word > Tools Menu > Options > General > Measurement Units > There are 5 options: Inches, Centimeters, Millimeters, Points, Picas > Choose any of them that suits you > Hit OK.

For Office 2007 Users:
Open MS Word > Hit on the Office Button from top-left corner > Click Word Options Button >  Choose Advanced from left pane > Now scroll down to the Display section > Show measurement in units of: choose any of the units from the drop down box > Hit OK.

For Office 2010 User:
Open MS Word > File > Options > Advanced > Scroll down to the Display Section > Choose your desired unit from the drop down box right to the Show measurement in units of > Hit OK

Change Photoshop Transparency Grid Color!!

If youre a Photoshop user, you must know about transparency grid. Transparency Grid is a checkerboard which appears when youre working with an image with transparent background. If your image has no color in the background, this checkerboard appears behind the image.

Okay fine. Transparency will be indicated by the checkerboard. But you may ask, why I will change the color of transparency grid. In this post Im gonna answer this question. And I will also show, how to change the color of the transparency grid.

Why to Change?

Suppose youve an image with white background. And you need to remove this background behind the image. You know there are different ways to remove background. Im not gonna discuss it here.

In the critical part of the image, Magic selection tool may not be able to select the white part. In that situation you can manually select the unselected portion. But you may also fail remove the white background properly. Because you cant select the white background as your default transparency grid is looks like a checkerboard that contains white color! So after saving the image you will notice there are some scattered white spots in the background.

To get rid of this problem, you can change the default transparent grid.

How to Change?

Very simple. Im using Photoshop CS5. Run Adobe Photoshop from your PC and follow the instruction -

  1. Go to the Edit Menu.
  2. Select Preferences > Choose Transparency & Gamut.
  3. Now you will get the Preferences window with Transparency option selected.
  4. Keep the Grid size Medium or as your wish.
  5. Choose Dark from Grid Colors. Or you can customize the color using the custom option. You can also use any other color from the list if any of them is suitable for you.
  6. Hit OK after choosing the Grid colors.

Remember, the default grid color may need to changed when youre gonna remove any white background from your image. Or background that is light black. Otherwise you dont need to change it.

Turning off the Grid!

You can totally turn off the grid! Yes! If youre bored with the grid that is shown for transparent layer, then you can turn off the grid from preferences window.

Go to the Grid size as shown in the image above. And choose None. Now create a new document from your Photoshop with transparent layer. You will just see white background instead of a grid. But your image will have transparent layer.

How to Change the Size of Virtual Memory Paging File

PNG Image of RAM, Virtual Memory, Main Memory

In my previous post I talked about virtual memory. Today Im gonna discuss about how to change the size of virtual memory. Before starting the main discussion I would like to say something about virtual memory again. But I recommend you to read my previous post about virtual memory.

A part of your hard disk space is used to support or accelerate the operations of your PC. This part is know as Paging File or Virtual Memory. When the amount RAM is low, it is virtual memory that supports RAM to carry out its activities. The term Virtual Memory and Paging File are used interchangeably.

By default Windows sets a virtual memory on your PC. Sometimes it may not be accurate. Or it may not be in the way that you would like to set. In that case you can change the size of virtual memory.

For example:
  • You may need to increase or decrease the size or virtual memory
  • You may like to change the drive for virtual memory etc.

Before starting the operation, check the amount of RAM installed on your PC. Right click on My Computer > Properties > Check the RAM

Or type dxdiag in the Run option. Read more.

You can change the size of virtual memory as:
  • Increasing the Size (Keep it equal to the size of your RAM)
  • Or Decreasing the Size
  • Or setting No Paging File (Not Recommended)

Whatever you wanna do, follow the steps below:
  1. Press Start + Pause/Break to open System. Or right click on My Computer and hit on Properties.
  2. Now, Windows XP user should find the System Tab. And Windows Vista/ 7/ 8 user should go to the Advanced System Settings.
  3. Here a new window appears named System Properties. Go to the Advanced Tab of this window.
  4. Hit on the Settings located under the Performance section.
  5. Go to the Advanced Tab and click on the Change button.
  6. Now select the drive where you wanna set the virtual memory or paging file. (Use Drive C)
  7. Select the Custom Size. And look at the below of this Window. Minimum Allowed, Recommended and Currently Allocated. I suggest you to use the numeric value shows in the Recommended.
  8. Look at the image below. Recommended is 2039 MB. I used 2039 MB both in Initial and Maximum size. You should also set an amount that shows in the recommended.
  9. Type the recommended value both in Initial and Maximum size. Then hit on the Set button. Then hit OK > OK > OK.
  10. Restart your PC if required.

Increase or Decrease the Size of Virtual Memory and Paging File

Short Instruction:
Start + Break > Advance/ Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Settings under Performance > Advanced > Change > Custom Size > Type your required amount of virtual memory both in Initial and Maximum Size > Set > OK > OK > OK > Restart.

After setting the virtual memory, you will see a file named pagefile.sys in the drive where you set the virtual memory. If you set the size of virtual memory 2 GB, then the size of pagefile.sys will be 2 GB. That means your hard disk space will be compensated. So, never set this unnecessarily high.

Caution: You can choose no paging file from the step 8. But deleting or disabling the paging file is not recommended!

How to Change Office 2013 Theme

Office 2013 Logo

Just 2 days ago, I shared Office 2013 Activator. And from now, you will get tips on Microsoft Office 2013. Im gonna start with a little trick - customizing the office theme. Microsoft Office has 3 themes - Dark Gray, Light Gray and White. And you can choose one which you prefer.

By default, you will get the light gray or white theme. But I dont like them at all. Because both of them looks somewhat like blue. My choice is dark gray. And I really like it. Because this will protect your eyes from light. But in light gray, you may feel too much light.

You can also change the theme if you want. It takes less than a minute. Simply look at the image below:

Changing Office 2013 Theme

Hope youve understood the procedure from the above image. Again Im gonna clarify it. Remember that, you can change the theme from Word, Excel or PowerPoint. But Im using Word Now. Follow the steps below:
  1. Run Word 2013
  2. Click on the File button from the upper left corner
  3. Now choose Account as shown in the above image
  4. Click on the drop down menu under Office Theme
  5. Choose your desired theme
Youre done!

You can also change Office 2007, 2010 theme. But in these versions, you will not find the term Theme. You will get Color Scheme there. Find out more . . .

Change Optimize the Blog Title Description URL in Blogger

Blog Title, Description and URL perfect example

While creating a blog in blogger, you have to name your site and enter the URL. But choosing an appropriate name for the site with perfect URL is not a very easy task. You should think and research about what will be the Title, Description and URL of the site. Because they have a great impact on search results.

Let’s Analyse a Case

Here I’d like to share my personal experience. When I created Marks PC Solution 4 years ago, I was simply a novice in blogging. In that time I didn’t think much about the URL. I used munnamark.blogspot.com as my URL.

But it doesn’t match with the blog title. The URL should be well-matched with the title. If the URL and title are related, then your site will be easily on the first page of the search result.

If you search Marks PC Solution on Google, it will be the number 1 in the search result. Thousands of links across the web have helped my site to be first in the search result.

But if my site URL were something like that- markspcsolution.blogspot.com or markspc.blogspot.com, then it will be the number 1 even without so many backlinks.

If the blog title and URL are similar, then it is easier for that site to be appeared on the first page when searched by its title!

Choosing a Better Title

Certainly choosing the appropriate title is crucial for any site. Blog title should be matched with the contents. Let’s see the title of my site:

Marks PC Solution

There are many sites which include the words PC Solution. But only 2 or 3 sites may have the word Mark of Marks with PC Solution. The word- Marks makes the title unique. And when you search Marks PC Solution on Bing or Google, my site will be the top in the search page.

Considering all these things, when naming the site, you should keep in mind:

  • Naming a site is just like naming a baby, or naming a movie. It should carry a meaning.
  • Never pick a name that doesnt represent the site’s contents.
  • Blog title shouldnt be very common. Pick a unique name if possible.
  • It shouldnt be very long. Keep it less than 20 characters.
  • The title should be easy to spell, pronounce and remember.

Proper Description

The description is what the visitors see just below the title. It is not much important for search engines rather it is important for the readers. Because the search description describes your site. It tells the visitors what the site is about.

But the search description is different. Read more . . .

For example: The search description of Marks PC Solution is as below:

Your Ultimate Choice for Computer, Internet, Blogging, SEO & PC Troubleshooting Tips!

If you closely analyse this description, you will realize none of the posts of this site is out of this description. In that sense, we can say, our description is perfectly matched with the site’s contents.

Consider the following issues while choosing a description for your site:

  • Description should meaningful and easy to remember
  • Keep it relevant to the contents/ blog posts
  • Keep it short but complete (Less than 100 characters)
  • Never mention needless words there!

Choosing Appropriate URL

This is definitely an important part of SEO. A good URL can bring success in search results.

Remember, an established site’s URL doesn’t need to be changed even it is not matched with the title. If you change the URL, it will degrade your SEO position. And you may have thousands of links on the web. Those links will be wasted. Though you can redirect your site to the new URL somehow.

But definitely you’re gonna lose the links you’ve shared on social sites like Google +, Facebook, Twitter, Linked in etc.

When choosing the URL of your site you should keep in mind:

  • URL should be as short as possible so that users can type it quickly.
  • The more the URL is related to the title, the more benefit you will get from the search engines.
  • URL should be easy to remember.
  • Choose an URL which has a meaning. But never try to make it similar to the URLs of other sites. Better keep it unique. For example- munnamark.blogspot.com. You will never find an URL that includes the word munnamark. This is unique!

Changing Title, Description and URL

Before changing the Blog Title, Description and URL, be careful about the negative effects of these changes. I suggest you to read the whole article again to know more about naming and describing the site.

Okay let’s start. Sign in to your blogger dashboard.
  1. Go to the Settings tab.
  2. Now click on the Basic button and look at the image below.
  3. Title, Description and Blog Address are marked. And at the right of each item you will see an Edit button.
  4. To change the Title, click on the Edit button. Then choose a different name. By the same way you can change the description.
  5. Now go to the Blog Address. Hit on the edit button. Change the word and check whether it’s available. If your desired URL is available then save it. (This may require time for the search engines to index your new URL)

How to Change Blog Title, Description and URL

Advice: Never try to change the name and URL of your site unless it is essential. Never try to change it just to play. Because your social sharing links, other backlinks and search index will be infected for sure!

How to Change or Create Password in Windows 8

If youre still using the earlier versions of Windows then you may thought creating or changing a password in Windows 8 is same as previous versions. But those who are working with Windows 8 know that this is not same at all.

When you are installing Windows 8 for the first time then you can set a password at the end of the installation process. If you skip that step during the time of installation then you will have to set it from the PC settings.

In earlier versions of Windows password can be managed from a control panel item named User Accounts. This item is still available. But you cant manage your password from here. Today I will show you the easiest way to do this task.

Remember: Your Windows should be genuine or it may ask you to activate windows while doing this task. So, if you have any problem regarding activation then visit: Windows 8 Activation Process.
  1. Press Start + W > type Password > select Change your password. Or you can simply press the Start button and click on user icon from the top right corner. Then choose Change account picture and choose Users. Both do the same job.
  2. Now as you can see in the image below, hit on the Change your password under the sign in option. Click on it to change.
  3. Now you can change or create your password from here as you did in earlier versions.
  4. You can also set a picture password from here. Do it with caution if youre a beginner!
You can also change your password in running condition if forgotten !! Visit here to know more: Change Windows Password if Forgotten.

How to Change the Folder Icon

Use Custom Icon in Folder

By default, Windows folders look like a yellow folder. And if you use any custom theme, it may change. Many of you might know how to customize the Windows Folder Icon. Its very easy to change. Previously I discussed about how to change the pen drive/ hard drives icon. Today Im gonna discuss about changing the folder icon.

Its been few months when I published any Windows trick. Sorry for the long break!

To change the folder icon is much easier than changing the drive icon. If you wanna change the drive icon, you have to use an autorun file. But you dont need any notepad file to change the folder icon. All you need is just an icon format (must be .ico) image.

First collect an icon format image. You can convert an image into icon in any of the following ways:
  • Create Icon using IcoFx (Only 1.62 MB)
  • Convert Image into Icon Online

I prefer using IcoFx. Download it and convert your image into icon within seconds. After getting the icon, you can go for the next step.

Change Folder Icon
  1. Copy the icon that you wanna show in the folder.
  2. Go to My Computer (Start + E) or any location where your desired folder is located.
  3. Paste the icon within that folder.
  4. Press Backspace to get out of this folder. Now click right mouse button over the folder and go to the Customize tab > Change Icon as shown in the image below.

Customize the Windows Folder

After hitting the Change icon button, you will get a list of Windows Icons. You can use any of them. But here Im gonna use the custom icon. So you have to click on the browse button.

Windows Default Icons

After hitting the browse button, you have to locate the folder again. Go to the folder and choose your custom icon that youve copied in the first step. Now hit on Open > Apply > OK. And youre done!

Restart your PC if you dont see any change.

Note: Its not necessary that the icon needs to be copied in your desired folder. Windows can show the folder icon from any other folder. But when you take that folder through a CD or Pen Drive, you may not get that icon with the folder. Thats why Im recommending to keep the custom icon within this folder.
