Create Short URL by Google URL Shortener

Shortening URL is a great way to share large URLs. There are many free URL shorteners. Even some shorteners (ie. AdFly) offer revenue to the users. But I simply hate them. Because it bores people. More than two years ago I wrote about Tiny URL. But do you know, Google has a shortener too?! Lets try . . .
Google URL Shortener
Follow the above link and you will get the following view:

Now copy and paste your desired URL in the box and hit on the Shorten URL button. Immediately you will get a short URL in the right side.
Remember, if you are not signed in to your Google account, you have to enter captcha. But if youre signed in, you dont need to type captcha and a list of short URLs create by you will be kept in your account. You can also view the number of click on those short URLs!
In the list of short URL, you will get detailed analysis of each URL. How many clicks from where, which browser, which operating system etc.
For Example:
This is my sites URL - http://www.markspcsolution.com/
This is short URL - goo.gl/H4ydU2
Have you noticed, just 06 characters after goo.gl. Previously it was only 05 characters. Whatever the size of URL, you will get a small URL.
Suppose, the URL of this post is as below -
http://www.markspcsolution.com/2012/04/how-to-shorten-long-url.html
And the short URL of this is here - goo.gl/sK1ylX.. . And its really short!
When someone clicks on the short URL, he will be redirected to the main URL within a very short time. When youre sharing a large URL via mobile text, it could be difficult for you to type when the copy paste option is not available. But you can share short URL anytime, anywhere. :)
Note: All goo.gl URLs are public and can be accessed by anyone.

Change Optimize the Blog Title Description URL in Blogger

While creating a blog in blogger, you have to name your site and enter the URL. But choosing an appropriate name for the site with perfect URL is not a very easy task. You should think and research about what will be the Title, Description and URL of the site. Because they have a great impact on search results.
Lets Analyse a Case
Here Id like to share my personal experience. When I created Marks PC Solution 4 years ago, I was simply a novice in blogging. In that time I didnt think much about the URL. I used munnamark.blogspot.com as my URL.
But it doesnt match with the blog title. The URL should be well-matched with the title. If the URL and title are related, then your site will be easily on the first page of the search result.
If you search Marks PC Solution on Google, it will be the number 1 in the search result. Thousands of links across the web have helped my site to be first in the search result.
But if my site URL were something like that- markspcsolution.blogspot.com or markspc.blogspot.com, then it will be the number 1 even without so many backlinks.
If the blog title and URL are similar, then it is easier for that site to be appeared on the first page when searched by its title!
Choosing a Better Title
Certainly choosing the appropriate title is crucial for any site. Blog title should be matched with the contents. Lets see the title of my site:
Marks PC Solution
There are many sites which include the words PC Solution. But only 2 or 3 sites may have the word Mark of Marks with PC Solution. The word- Marks makes the title unique. And when you search Marks PC Solution on Bing or Google, my site will be the top in the search page.
Considering all these things, when naming the site, you should keep in mind:
- Naming a site is just like naming a baby, or naming a movie. It should carry a meaning.
- Never pick a name that doesnt represent the sites contents.
- Blog title shouldnt be very common. Pick a unique name if possible.
- It shouldnt be very long. Keep it less than 20 characters.
- The title should be easy to spell, pronounce and remember.
Proper Description
The description is what the visitors see just below the title. It is not much important for search engines rather it is important for the readers. Because the search description describes your site. It tells the visitors what the site is about.
But the search description is different. Read more . . .
For example: The search description of Marks PC Solution is as below:
Your Ultimate Choice for Computer, Internet, Blogging, SEO & PC Troubleshooting Tips!
If you closely analyse this description, you will realize none of the posts of this site is out of this description. In that sense, we can say, our description is perfectly matched with the sites contents.
Consider the following issues while choosing a description for your site:
- Description should meaningful and easy to remember
- Keep it relevant to the contents/ blog posts
- Keep it short but complete (Less than 100 characters)
- Never mention needless words there!
Choosing Appropriate URL
This is definitely an important part of SEO. A good URL can bring success in search results.
Remember, an established sites URL doesnt need to be changed even it is not matched with the title. If you change the URL, it will degrade your SEO position. And you may have thousands of links on the web. Those links will be wasted. Though you can redirect your site to the new URL somehow.
But definitely youre gonna lose the links youve shared on social sites like Google +, Facebook, Twitter, Linked in etc.
When choosing the URL of your site you should keep in mind:
- URL should be as short as possible so that users can type it quickly.
- The more the URL is related to the title, the more benefit you will get from the search engines.
- URL should be easy to remember.
- Choose an URL which has a meaning. But never try to make it similar to the URLs of other sites. Better keep it unique. For example- munnamark.blogspot.com. You will never find an URL that includes the word munnamark. This is unique!
Changing Title, Description and URL
Before changing the Blog Title, Description and URL, be careful about the negative effects of these changes. I suggest you to read the whole article again to know more about naming and describing the site.
Okay lets start. Sign in to your blogger dashboard.
- Go to the Settings tab.
- Now click on the Basic button and look at the image below.
- Title, Description and Blog Address are marked. And at the right of each item you will see an Edit button.
- To change the Title, click on the Edit button. Then choose a different name. By the same way you can change the description.
- Now go to the Blog Address. Hit on the edit button. Change the word and check whether its available. If your desired URL is available then save it. (This may require time for the search engines to index your new URL)

Advice: Never try to change the name and URL of your site unless it is essential. Never try to change it just to play. Because your social sharing links, other backlinks and search index will be infected for sure!

Tell Google when your Sites URL Changes

More or less, all internet users are informed about the URL (Uniform Resouce Locator). A URL is simply the address of a site in internet. With the help of URL, you can directly access to a particular site. While general people just need to know the URL only to access a site, webmasters have to perform lots of tasks with it.
Webmasters need to create thousands of links through URLs. Time to time they need to check the sites status through URLs. But these are not my concern in this post. Today Id like to discuss about how to inform Google when you change your sites address.
When a site gets a new address/ URL, definitely it loses social sharings. All backlinks of the site will also be lost. And search engines will not entertain that site as before. Because youre simply a stranger to them! Search engines even dont know about your site until you submit it for indexing.
But Google Webmaster Tools allows you to tell Google when your site moves to a new domain or URL. You can do this through Change of Address option. But there are some preconditions you must fill up:
- You must have an account on Google Webmaster.
- You should have sufficient knowledge to handle Google Webmaster Tools.
- Both your old and new sites should be added and verified in Google Webmaster.
- Make sure your original site is not a subdomain. (ie. munnamark.blogspot.com)
- Your new site shouldnt be a subdomain. (ie. markspc.blgospot.com
Advantages of using this Tool
- You can easily recover your search ranking position.
- Its safe. Because only verified site owners can use it.
- Google will index your site quickly.
Instruction:
- Sign in to your Google Webmaster account.
- On the Homepage, click on the site that you wanna work with.
- Click on the drop down arrow by the side of Gear icon (Look at the above image).
- Select Change of Address
- After completing steps 1 - 3, click Select a verified site (Your new site).
Thats it. Changes will stay in effect for 180 days.
Troubleshooting:
If your new site doesnt appear in the Select a site, make sure -
Troubleshooting:
If your new site doesnt appear in the Select a site, make sure -
- Both of your sites are added and verified in Webmaster Tools.
- Both the sites have root level domains, not a subdomain. (ie. www.example.com)
- You havent already requested for change of address.

How to Create Custom Post URL in Blogger

When you publish a post in blogger, normally you dont need to create or set an URL. WordPress has the same feature. Post URL is automatically created from post title. But sometimes it maybe too large. And sometimes it may not be possible to show the full title in the URL. As a result it doesnt carry actual meaning. In that case you can customize your post URL.
Look at the Link below:
http://munnamark.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-to-check-cell-phones-quality-using.html
This link is related to the post- How to Check Cell Phones Quality Using IMEI - *#06#
The title of the post carry the full meaning. You might notice that- here the URL doesnt carry the proper meaning. It only shows- how to check cell phones quality using. A user may not understand what does the post include just by URL.
But you can customize the URL in such a way so that it expresses a meaning and have precision. And certainly it will be easier for your visitors to understand what the post is all about when they just see the post URL.
You might notice the structure of an URL. There are 3 parts in the blogger URL. Such as-
- Home Page URL : http://munnamark.blogspot.com/
- Date : 2012/04/
- Post URL : how-to-check-cell-phones-quality-using.html
Hope now you realize how your post URL is created.
If you wanna create custom URL for your post you have to use the last part. You cant omit the home URL and date. Because omitting these two parts will affect the uniqueness of your URL.
By this time you should have a proper knowledge about blogger and post URL. Now lets see how to create Custom URL :
- Make sure youre signed in to your blogger account.
- Create New Post from anywhere that you do usually.
- Look at the right- Post Settings > Permalink.
- There are two options- Automatic and Custom. Look at the image below for help.
- Type your desired words in the custom box separated by a hyphen (-) or dot (.). Remember- space, ?, !, / these are not allowed here. And try to avoid underscore ( _ ). Because it will not separate your words.
- When you finish hit on the Done button. Thats it.
Thus you can optimize your blog posts permalink for more visitors. You can also look at this posts URL for example.
- My post title is- How to Create Custom Post URL in Blogger
- My URL is- http://munnamark.blogspot.com/2013/03/custom-url.html
If I didnt set a custom URL then it will somewhat like that-
http://munnamark.blogspot.com/2013/03/how-to-create-custom-post-url-in-blogger.html
Though it carries a full meaning, but look at the URL size- Too large. So creating custom URL will also let your reduce the size of the post URL.
Hope you enjoy this post!
