How to Optimize and Improve the Loading Time of Websites
Couple of weeks ago I discussed about Pagespeed. It was about how much faster your site is according to Google Pagespeed. Today I will discuss about Web Page Optimization that is very similar to pagespeed topic.
Bloggers are too much busy with SEO. And many of them are not interested in WSO. But they dont know Web Site Optimization is also a part of SEO. A site that takes huge time to load will be deprived of returning visitors. But Google focus on Returning visitors while considering page rank!
Todays discussion about the loading time of any website including blog or forum. In Google Page Speed there you can get only a score out of 100 with few suggestions. But in WebSiteOptimization.com you will get a detailed information about what to do to improve the loading time.
Follow the steps below to analyze your site:
- Visit WebSite Analyzer
- Enter your sites URL ìn the box named- Enter URL to diagnose and hit on the submit button. (ie. http://munnamark.blogspot.com)
- Retype the captcha character in the box provided and hit on continue button.
- Now you get the report of your site in detail named as Web Page Speed Report.
In this report you will get necessary information about your whole website. Each element of your site will be discussed separately. Thus you can understand which parts of your site need to be optimized.
Though everything is clearly defined in the report Im gonna discuss about the most important things to focus:
- Number of Objects: Make sure your total number of objects is less than 20. Object may be any graphic designs, buttons etc. The more the objects in your page the more time it will take to load. Because it may increase HTTP requests.
- Image Size and amount: You may like to use more images. But excessive use of images will increase the loading time as it may increase HTTP requests.
- Number of CSS Files: Dont use too much external CSS files. Because they are placed at the head of your HTML and need to be load faster than any other contents. So keep as few CSS files as possible.
- Position of number Java Scripts: Place JavaScript at the end of the body if possible. So that they cant slow down the loading of the contents. And dont use too much external JavaScript in the page. Keep Java Script size within 20 KB.
- Size of the Page: Keep the total size of the page within 100 KB if possible.

Optimize the Performance Settings of Photoshop
Adjusting the performance settings could double your Photoshop experience. Though Photoshop automatically sets the performance depending on your hardware configuration. But sometimes you may need to adjust the default settings to improve the performance. If your hardware configuration is strong, you should customize the performance settings.
Couple of days ago, I got a new CPU you know. And the following parts will affect the Photoshop performance:
- Intel Core i3 Processor (3.3 GHz, 3 MB Cache)
- 4GB DDR3 RAM (1600 Bus)
- 1 TB HDD
And I always use Photoshop CS5 (Portable) for edidting or creating image. The hardware of my old PC was not strong enough. And it didnt allow me to customize the settings so much. But the new one lets me customize the performance settings.
Optimize the Performance Settings| Photoshop CS4, CS5, CS6
Dont be confused! All the images used in this post, options Im talking about are based on Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended. Since I dont have old versions of Photoshop Im not sure whether the options are same or different. But I hope, there could be a bit difference, not more than that.
Lets start -
- Run Adobe Photoshop.
- Go to Edit Menu and Choose Preferenes > Performance.
- Now you will get 4 sections: Memory Usage, History & Cache, Scratch Disks and GPU settings.
Lets customize one by one -
Memory Usage
This is the most important part of this topic. I mean the usage of RAM.

Look at the memory usage part. Available RAM indicates your usable RAM. Ideal range is the range which Photoshop thinks optimum for your PC. By default, Photoshop use 60% to 70% of available RAM. But Ive 4 GB RAM installed in my PC. Why do I use 1585 MB only?
Ive chosen 100% of the available memory. There is a slider too. You can increase/ decrease the memory usage by sliding the indicator to the right or left.
History & Cache
The next one is History & Cache. Look at the image below:
In this part our main concern is Cache. History doesnt matter. By default photoshop can save up to 1000 history states. But never do that. Remember, the more states will consume more hard disk space. Lets keep it to 20. Or you can reduce the value to 10.
If you have more than 3 GB usable RAM, set the Cache Levels to 8 and Tile Size to 1028 K. Or you can choose more cache levels for bigger documents with few layers. And fewer cache levels for smaller documents with many layers.
Choosing higher cache levels and bigger tile size may slow down the speed while opening a document. But it will significantly improve the processing capacity. So if you have faster RAM and large hard disk, choose the higher cache levels and tile size.
Scratch Disks
What is Scratch Disks? A list of your hard disk volumes! Before talking about this lets have a look at the snapshot:
How much RAM you have? 2 GB, 4 GB, 8GB or more? Sometimes this is not enough for processing images. Thats why Photoshop uses a part of your hard disk as scratch disk. By default, Photoshop uses the Drive C: to scratch. Normally we use C as booting drive.
But using booting drive as scratch disk is not a good idea. Lets choose another drive which is faster and having plenty of free space. Here Ive choosen the drive D: as scratch disk. You can also choose more than one scratch disk if necessary. In that case you can rearrange the order using the up and down arrow.
Suppose, youve selected drive D as scratch disk. Now if you run photoshop, you will see a temp file in the D drive. ie. Photoshop Temp54895112832. And after closing the photoshop, this file will be vanished automatically.
If you have any external disk which is faster than your internal hard disk, you can use that disk as your scratch disk.
GPU Settings
You can only use this feature if your video card supports this. Look at the above image.
Detected Video Card: Intel(R) HD Graphics 2500.
Here you can Enable OpenGL Drawing. You may not be able to find any difference directly. But this option will enable some features that enhance the overall performance.
OpenGL Drawing enables the following features:
- Rotate View Tool
- Birdseye Zooming
- Pixel Grid
- Flick Panning Preferences, Scrubby Zoom
- HUD Color Picker, Sampling Ring etc.
Enhancements:
- Smooth Pan and Zoom
- Drop Shadow for Canvas Border
- 3D Interaction Acceleration etc.

Change Optimize the Blog Title Description URL in Blogger
While creating a blog in blogger, you have to name your site and enter the URL. But choosing an appropriate name for the site with perfect URL is not a very easy task. You should think and research about what will be the Title, Description and URL of the site. Because they have a great impact on search results.
Let’s Analyse a Case
Here I’d like to share my personal experience. When I created Marks PC Solution 4 years ago, I was simply a novice in blogging. In that time I didn’t think much about the URL. I used munnamark.blogspot.com as my URL.
But it doesn’t match with the blog title. The URL should be well-matched with the title. If the URL and title are related, then your site will be easily on the first page of the search result.
If you search Marks PC Solution on Google, it will be the number 1 in the search result. Thousands of links across the web have helped my site to be first in the search result.
But if my site URL were something like that- markspcsolution.blogspot.com or markspc.blogspot.com, then it will be the number 1 even without so many backlinks.
If the blog title and URL are similar, then it is easier for that site to be appeared on the first page when searched by its title!
Choosing a Better Title
Certainly choosing the appropriate title is crucial for any site. Blog title should be matched with the contents. Let’s see the title of my site:
Marks PC Solution
There are many sites which include the words PC Solution. But only 2 or 3 sites may have the word Mark of Marks with PC Solution. The word- Marks makes the title unique. And when you search Marks PC Solution on Bing or Google, my site will be the top in the search page.
Considering all these things, when naming the site, you should keep in mind:
- Naming a site is just like naming a baby, or naming a movie. It should carry a meaning.
- Never pick a name that doesnt represent the site’s contents.
- Blog title shouldnt be very common. Pick a unique name if possible.
- It shouldnt be very long. Keep it less than 20 characters.
- The title should be easy to spell, pronounce and remember.
Proper Description
The description is what the visitors see just below the title. It is not much important for search engines rather it is important for the readers. Because the search description describes your site. It tells the visitors what the site is about.
But the search description is different. Read more . . .
For example: The search description of Marks PC Solution is as below:
Your Ultimate Choice for Computer, Internet, Blogging, SEO & PC Troubleshooting Tips!
If you closely analyse this description, you will realize none of the posts of this site is out of this description. In that sense, we can say, our description is perfectly matched with the site’s contents.
Consider the following issues while choosing a description for your site:
- Description should meaningful and easy to remember
- Keep it relevant to the contents/ blog posts
- Keep it short but complete (Less than 100 characters)
- Never mention needless words there!
Choosing Appropriate URL
This is definitely an important part of SEO. A good URL can bring success in search results.
Remember, an established site’s URL doesn’t need to be changed even it is not matched with the title. If you change the URL, it will degrade your SEO position. And you may have thousands of links on the web. Those links will be wasted. Though you can redirect your site to the new URL somehow.
But definitely you’re gonna lose the links you’ve shared on social sites like Google +, Facebook, Twitter, Linked in etc.
When choosing the URL of your site you should keep in mind:
- URL should be as short as possible so that users can type it quickly.
- The more the URL is related to the title, the more benefit you will get from the search engines.
- URL should be easy to remember.
- Choose an URL which has a meaning. But never try to make it similar to the URLs of other sites. Better keep it unique. For example- munnamark.blogspot.com. You will never find an URL that includes the word munnamark. This is unique!
Changing Title, Description and URL
Before changing the Blog Title, Description and URL, be careful about the negative effects of these changes. I suggest you to read the whole article again to know more about naming and describing the site.
Okay let’s start. Sign in to your blogger dashboard.
- Go to the Settings tab.
- Now click on the Basic button and look at the image below.
- Title, Description and Blog Address are marked. And at the right of each item you will see an Edit button.
- To change the Title, click on the Edit button. Then choose a different name. By the same way you can change the description.
- Now go to the Blog Address. Hit on the edit button. Change the word and check whether it’s available. If your desired URL is available then save it. (This may require time for the search engines to index your new URL)
Advice: Never try to change the name and URL of your site unless it is essential. Never try to change it just to play. Because your social sharing links, other backlinks and search index will be infected for sure!

Test and Optimize the Load Time of your Site
Today Im gonna talk about improving the loading time of website or blog. Well this is not a new post in this blog. You will find the following posts related to this one:

To be honest, Im not an expert in optimizing websites or blogs. Again I can say, someone shouldnt be HTML or CSS expert to improve the loading time. There are lots of free online tools to test the loading time of website or blog. Today I will discuss about a site named Pingdom Tools.
- First of all you need to visit here.
- Enter your Home Page URL in the blank box and hit Test Now button.
- Within few seconds you will get an score or result as the above image.
Just under this short result you will get some buttons named as:
- Waterfall
- Performance Grade
- Page analysis
- History
Each of this options will show you a detailed analysis of the tested URL. If you analyse the result then you will be able to know which part of your site needs to be optimized.
Here are few suggestions for you:
- Use the minimum number of images
- Use the minimum number of CSS/Java/HTML scripts
- Try to place the Java/HTML script to the bottom of the site
- Do not upload your scripts in the slow servers
- Try to keep the size of image minimum
- Avoid using any unnecessary scripts that is only for beautification purpose
