Caffeine to Hummingbird An Upgrade to Google Search Algorithm!
Most of the internet users have no idea about how the search engine works. The system that a search engine applies to find the relevant results among millions of websites is called Search Algorithm. Whether you will find an appropriate result from a search depends on the algorithm. With a powerful Search Algorithm, Google is the top search engine of the world. And recently a new search algorithm, called Hummingbird, has been launched by the search giant.
Septermber 26, 1998. The starting of Google. And just yesterday, Google celebrated their 15th Birthday. This birthday was not a mere celebration actually. Moreover it comes with an annoucement of major change in Google Search Engine Algorithm. Its been 3 years since Google made a major change in their search algorithm named as Caffeine. And the new one, Hummingbird, has been lunched one month ago.
Amit Singhal, senior vice president of search, said on Thursday- the company launched its latest "Hummingbird" algorithm about a month ago and that it currently affects 90 percent of worldwide searches via Google.
Whats New in Hummingbird?
- Capable of handling large and complex queries
- Precise and Faster Processing of Queries
- Focus on the meaning behind the query words
- Pay more attention to earch word in a query
- Consider the relevance of the pages rather than focusing on the page rank only.
- Improved converstional search (People When Speaking Searches)
These are all Ive been able to gather about Hummingbird. Because, Google didnt inform much about it. Ive collected those information from different websites. Lets discuss some other issues:
What about Pagerank?
Most of you know that pagerank indicates the overall quality of a site. But in Google search, pagerank is not everything. There are more than 200 search signals used by Google to sort search results. And pagerank is one of them.
Hummingbird considers pagerank too. But it emphasizes on the relevance of the query. If the search query matches your contents, no matter who you are and what is your ranking, you will be the in the first page. And thats how Marks PC Solution competes with storng sites even with a page rank 0.
Is there any Feature of Caffeine?
Sure! Some parts of old search algorithm is still being used by Hummingbird. It just changes the unncessary parts and adds some new. But nobody can guarantee about the old parts. Because they could be changed anytime if Google finds something better.
What Happened to Updates like Penguine, Panda etc?
From time to time, Google updated their algorithm. Sometimes they added new tools like penguine, panda etc. Some of them are being cosidered as the parts of old engine in a new engine. I mean, these were not changed entierly.
What about SEO?
As the search algorithm changes, SEO experts and site developers may think of change in ther optimization techniques. Though Google assures that no change is necessary. It said there is nothing to worry about SEO.
But I personally dont believe this. Definitely the new algorithm will affect the search appearance of a site either positively or negatively.

Google Takes Over News Stream Service Wavii
Doesnt Wavii logo look like Google? Yes it is! Wavii changed their logo as it is acquired by Google! Tech giants often take over innovative services which have bright future. Few days ago, Yahoo acquires Samli, a news service. Last year Microsoft purchased Skype. And just now Google have acquired Wavii.
Before the acquisition, Wavii used the following logo:
Google has purchased many services so far and improved them a lot. Many of which are quite profitable. Such as YouTube, Blogspot etc. And recently it takes over Wavii, which might be used to improve the search results.
Wavii has been created by a group of experts, who previously worked in the organizations like Microsoft, Amazon etc. Founded last year, Wavii provides customized news feeds to the users and summarizes news stories, tweets and blog posts for them. Considering the importance, Apple was also interested to purchase Wavii. But Google managed the deal before Apple! :)
Google didnt publish any news about the price of the Wavii. But it is estimated that it costs Google about $30 million.

Gmail Update Contact your Google Circles!!
By this time, maybe all of you got a mail from Google. It says - Gmail Update: Reach More People you Know. Basically this is a new feature added to Gmail. And with this feature, Google+ and Gmail get closer. Now you can contact those people who are already in your circles even you dont know your their email addresses!
What you Need?
You should be a Google+ user with some circles. And of course you must have some people in your circles. If you havent created your circles and added some friends then visit Google+ to get some . . .
And if you wanna use this new feature, make sure youre using Gmail in Standard View. Basic HTML version of Gmail will not have this feature. If youre using basic HTML view, then you will find the Standard View option just at the bottom of the screen. Or at the top, just left to your email address. Once you click on the Standard View option, your Gmail will reload.
Note: Standard view cant be used properly, if your net connection is too bad.
About the Update - Reach More People you Know
Do you want to email someone you know, but havent shared emails addresses yet? This update of Gmail makes your task easier! While composing a new message, Gmail will suggest your Google+ connections as recipients, even if you havent exchanged your emails addresses. (Gmail should be loaded in Standard View)
How it Works?
As you know the privacy issue is related with this feature, emailing Google+ connections works little bit differently.
If you wanna send message to someone you know, but dont know his email, simply type his name. Gmail will show his name in your to box. Then you can send email. Just see the image below:
Your email address will be kept invisible to your connections until you send then an email. And their email addresses will also be invisible until they respond. Those of youre using the Google Talk or Gmail Chat option, should understand the process. You can chat with your circles without knowing their emails. And from now, you can send message without knowing someones email.
Receiving Emails from People Outside Your Circles
If someone outside your cricles sends you message, this email will be filtered into the Social Category of your inbox. And if you wanna start conversation with them, you can simply respond to that email or add him to a circle.
Control Who can Contact You
This new feature makes communicaiton more convenient. But some people may find this boring. Specially who receives too much emails everyday. Okay nothing to worry about. You can easily control who can contact you.
- Open Gmail in Standard View.
- Click on the Gear from upper right corner.
- Go to Settings.
- Scroll down to the Email Via Google+ sections from the General tab.
- Hit on the Drop Down menu and choose any of them: Anyone on the Google+, Extended Circles, Circles, No One.
- When youre done, hit on the Save Changes from the bottom of the page.
Critical Analysis
If youve regular interactions with social sites like Google+, Twitter or Facebook, you must understand, why Google brings this update!
Facebook was about to take over the control of internet by introducing itself as social site. Though Google was somewhat late, but they also introduced Google+ few years later. And Google is trying to cover the mistake through Google+.
But Google+ has not as many active users as Gmail. After this update, there will be a deep relation between Google+ and Gmail. Certainly this will give a boost to Google+. The number of active Google+ users will be increased. Google will be able to say, people are moving to Google+!

Installing Google Chrome on Xubuntu
Firefox is the default web browser on Xubuntu. You can install an additional browser, such as Google Chrome. This document can help you download Chrome and then install it on your Xubuntu PC.
Note: The procedures in this document specifically apply to Xubuntu 12.04, and generally apply to all Xubuntu releases.
Downloading Chrome - To download Chrome for your Xubuntu PC, do the following:
- Click the Applications Menu (white mouse), select Internet, and then click Firefox Web Browser to display its Ubuntu Start Page.
- In the Google search field, type google chrome, and then press Enter to search for and display links to Google Chrome.
- Click Chrome Browser - Google, click Download Chrome, select 32 bit .deb (For Debian/Ubuntu), and then click Accept and Install.
- Select Save File, and then click OK to download Chrome.
- Close Firefox, and then install Chrome according to procedure below.
Installing Chrome - To install Chrome on your Xubuntu PC, do the following:
- Download Chrome according to the procedure above.
- Double-click your Home folder, click Download, right-click the google-chrome-stable-current file, and then click Open With Ubuntu Software Center.
- After the Ubuntu Software Center window displays google-chrome-stable, click Install, type your password, and then click Authenticate.
- Close the Ubuntu Software Center window, click Applications Menu (white mouse), select Internet, click Google Chrome, make it your default browser (optional), and then click Start Google Chrome. (If prompted to Choose password for new keyring, click Cancel).

Google Countdown Timer
Couple of weeks ago I shared Cook Timer with you. And you can use this timer as alarm clock. But do you know Google has a nice timer for you?! If you are familiar with the special search techniques of Google you should not be surprised. But your friends will be really amazed when they will see that you are using an alarm clock in Google homepage!
Okay lets see how to do. First, go to Google. Now type any of the following queries as your wish -
- Google Timer
- Timer
- Count Down Timer
- Countdown Timer
I suggest you to use only Google Timer. Type Google Timer and hit enter. You will get the following timer in search result -
The default option is 5 Minutes 0 Second. Simply press the start button to launch the timer. After 5 minutes, it will be ringing.
To change the alarm time, click on it. It will look like as -
00h 00m 00s
You will get cursor there. You have to start with the Second (s) option. Type your seconds. If there is no second, then type 00.
Press left arrow key to move to the Minute option. If you need to set 3 minutes then type 3. By the say method, you can set hour.
Remember, you cant go directly to the Minute or Hour option. You have to go step by step. Even if Minute and Second is 0, you have to enter 00 there.
Features of the Timer
- After starting the timer, you will see a progress bar.
- You can use the stop button to pause and reset button to start the timer from beginning.
- By mistake, if you close the Tab with timer running, you will get a message.
- This timer works in offline too. Suppose youve started the timer when you were online. But if your net gets disconnected, it will be working. But you must keep your browser running.

Create Short URL by Google URL Shortener
Shortening URL is a great way to share large URLs. There are many free URL shorteners. Even some shorteners (ie. AdFly) offer revenue to the users. But I simply hate them. Because it bores people. More than two years ago I wrote about Tiny URL. But do you know, Google has a shortener too?! Lets try . . .

Follow the above link and you will get the following view:
Now copy and paste your desired URL in the box and hit on the Shorten URL button. Immediately you will get a short URL in the right side.
Remember, if you are not signed in to your Google account, you have to enter captcha. But if youre signed in, you dont need to type captcha and a list of short URLs create by you will be kept in your account. You can also view the number of click on those short URLs!
In the list of short URL, you will get detailed analysis of each URL. How many clicks from where, which browser, which operating system etc.
For Example:

This is short URL - goo.gl/H4ydU2
Have you noticed, just 06 characters after goo.gl. Previously it was only 05 characters. Whatever the size of URL, you will get a small URL.
Suppose, the URL of this post is as below -

And the short URL of this is here - goo.gl/sK1ylX.. . And its really short!
When someone clicks on the short URL, he will be redirected to the main URL within a very short time. When youre sharing a large URL via mobile text, it could be difficult for you to type when the copy paste option is not available. But you can share short URL anytime, anywhere. :)
Note: All goo.gl URLs are public and can be accessed by anyone.

Add Google Custom Search to your Site
Search engines run the world. Internet world is useless without search engines. You may argue that Facebook is not a search engine. But its a big search engine. Facebook needs to search appropriate person, place or group for you! When you need to find something, we usually search this either in Google, Bing or Yahoo. But a tiny blog or website should also have a search engine.
Most of the websites and even blogs have a search option. It makes easier to find something in your site. And it could be also helpful for you to search something on your site. In Marks PC Solution, there are more than 300 posts so far. Being the author of the site, sometimes I forget what topics are published here! So how do visitors get something without search box?
If youre using a blogger blog then you should be familiar with the default search box of blogger. You can easily add this from Layout tab through Add a Gadget option. But today Im gonna talk about Google Custom Search. Its a nice tool by Google that lets you create a custom search engine for your blog or website. Now Id like to show you the step by step procedure to create a custom search engine for your site. Before that, have a look at the custom search engine of Marks PC Solution- MPS. Lets begin -
- Visit and sign in to Google Custom Search Engine home.
- Hit on the Add button to create a new engine.
- Enter your sites URL in the Sites to search box (ie. http://munnamark.blogspot.com)
- Choose your desired language.
- Type a name in the Name box. (ie. Marks PC Search Engine)
- Hit on the Create button. Done!
If everything is okay, you will get a confirmation message.
- Hit on the Get Code button to get your search engine script.
- Hit on the Public URL to view your search engine page.
- Hit on the Control Panel to edit your search engine settings.
How to Install?
Its as simple as adding a JavaScript!
- First youve to select your search engine.
- Then go to Setup > Basics > Details > Get Code.
- Copy the script and Place it in your template properly.
Example: Youve to place the code within the <body> </body> tag. See the structure below. And choose a proper location where you wanna setup the search box.

And in blogger, installing the script is much easier. Simply go to the template. And then Add a JavaScript. I suggest you to place it either below the title or at the right side bar.
Customization:
As this is a custom search, you can customize it as your wish. Lets customize -
First go to the Google Custom Search Home. Select your search engine from here. Now you will see a control panel as the image below:
There are different options to customize your search engine. You can go to every option and change settings if necessary. First you can start with Setup option. Here you will get Basics, Make Money, Admin, Indexing etc. You can rename your search engine, give it a description, provide keywords, change language and add more sites to include in your search engine.
In the Make Money option, you can add your AdSense account here. If people use your search box and hit on Ads by Google, you will be paid through AdSense.
In Look and Feel option, you can change the layout and theme. In the customize option, you can change everything as you wish. In thumbnail option, you can choose whether pictures appears with search or not.

Google Home Page is Getting Changed!
The search giant Google may change their home page! Google named this project as Google Now. The new screen will look like iGoogle. Users will have the choice to select the gadgets that they want to be appeared on the screen. And Google has already announced that the iGoogle will not be available after November 01, 2013.
Actually Google is trying to compete with Facebook. Facebook is so popular that Google cant beat it even after having a large number of product and service categories. People are continuing to increase their time on social networks. To catch the peoples attention, Google launched the Google plus two years ago. At the beginning, it seems that Google Plus will be able to knock down Facebook. But reality was quite different. Still Google is trying to improve their service quality. Maybe the new project, Google Now, is a part of this effort.
If the new home page, Google Now, is launched then it will be look somewhat like yahoo. Yahoo home page shows different types of gadgets- Sports News, Weather, Political Issues etc. The new homepage of Google will include different types of information at the home page. And users will be able to add or remove cards as they like. This will be the basic difference between Google and Yahoo Homepage.
Google is now working to introduce this new service in Android Phones and Chromebook Pixel.

Actually most of the users of Google dont like to use iGoogle. It is less popular because of delay in loading the page. And it is relatively complicated too. As a result, Google is going to stop the iGoogle within this year. And trying to promote the new service- Google Now.
But introducing such a service at the home page may be a great risk for Google. Because most of the people are used to search information at Google Home Page. People like fast loading sites. When the new screen appears, it will not be as usual as we want. In that case, Google may loose its popularity as search engine! And it could be a great opportunity for bing.
As a precautionary measure, Google can let people choose whether they want to see the new look or old. But Im quite sure more than 70% people will be choosing the old look. Because most of the people use Google for searching information. And when they will see the new look, they will feel bore.
Google should launch the new screen in such a way so that it never bother the users. If Google forces users to continue with the new look, it will loose popularity as a search engine.

Got my 1st Payment from Google AdSense!!
To be honest, Im really surprised. Just 20 days ago, I shared a success story - 2nd Payment from 360 Ads! In that post I mentioned, due to the transaction issue, my AdSense Payment is not coming to bank account. But only a few days ago, I got my Payout from Google AdSense!
Only a few months ago, Google introduced Bank Wire Transfer for Bangladeshis. And I selected this payment system immediately. Then Google sent $272 to my Bank Account. But the payment was rejected by Citi Bank NA Singapore due to compliance issue. And I got disappointed.
Then Ive contacted AdSense team. They assured that, the problem will be solved soon. Days were passing but I found no luck. Again they sent payment of $438 on 21 February, 2014. And I was continuously checking my bank account. Few days later, AdSense Compliance Team informed me that they need some additional information to verify my account. Ive provided the necessary information.
After checking my Bank Account for more than 10 times, I got bored. Finally the payment came to my account on 20 March, 2014. And it was automatically deposited into the account. So I didnt know the balance has been added silently! And thats the most interesting part. When I was continuously trying to get the payment, it didnt come. But when I give up the idea, its come automatically. :)
If everything is okay, I will not suffer to collect my next payment. Since AdSense has resolved the compliance issue and verified my account.

Payment was made through Bank Wire Transfer. And the service charge is really low. Google doesnt take any fee over the transfer.
Google sent me $ 438.90 = Tk. 34,142
And I received $ 434.40 = Tk. 33674
Transfer Fee $ 4.5 = Tk. 350 (Im really confused! I thought it could be at least $30)
Next Plan
My CPU is about to die - shuts down any time without notice! Sometimes it runs 3 days without problems. Sometimes it doesnt run for 3 minutes properly! And the most recent problem is Hard Disk Error. Windows 8 has detected a hard disk error. It warns to back up my files. I may lose all of data any time.
So Ive decided to purchase a new system. My budget is $ 350. After purchasing the PC, hopefully I will discuss about PC configuration, hardware etc.
And as Im earning continuously, my parents hardly get borded with my PC works. :) Now Ive got more opportunites to enrich my site. And the visitors of Marks PC Solution will get more . . .

Tell Google when your Sites URL Changes
More or less, all internet users are informed about the URL (Uniform Resouce Locator). A URL is simply the address of a site in internet. With the help of URL, you can directly access to a particular site. While general people just need to know the URL only to access a site, webmasters have to perform lots of tasks with it.
Webmasters need to create thousands of links through URLs. Time to time they need to check the sites status through URLs. But these are not my concern in this post. Today Id like to discuss about how to inform Google when you change your sites address.
When a site gets a new address/ URL, definitely it loses social sharings. All backlinks of the site will also be lost. And search engines will not entertain that site as before. Because youre simply a stranger to them! Search engines even dont know about your site until you submit it for indexing.
But Google Webmaster Tools allows you to tell Google when your site moves to a new domain or URL. You can do this through Change of Address option. But there are some preconditions you must fill up:
- You must have an account on Google Webmaster.
- You should have sufficient knowledge to handle Google Webmaster Tools.
- Both your old and new sites should be added and verified in Google Webmaster.
- Make sure your original site is not a subdomain. (ie. munnamark.blogspot.com)
- Your new site shouldnt be a subdomain. (ie. markspc.blgospot.com
Advantages of using this Tool
- You can easily recover your search ranking position.
- Its safe. Because only verified site owners can use it.
- Google will index your site quickly.
Instruction:
- Sign in to your Google Webmaster account.
- On the Homepage, click on the site that you wanna work with.
- Click on the drop down arrow by the side of Gear icon (Look at the above image).
- Select Change of Address
- After completing steps 1 - 3, click Select a verified site (Your new site).
Thats it. Changes will stay in effect for 180 days.
